The need to solve a problem is what drew me to the interior design profession!
The National Lockdown got me rethinking the role of a designer, not only in creating a new normal, but also in reinventing the spaces we use. Right now; healthcare, workplace and retail environments (among the few) will need to adapt to new user behavior. Disruption is often disguised as an opportunity for change and innovation. With this pandemic, I see hospital wards completely white, stark and clinical with little room for more patients. This saddens me as I know that design has the power to positively impact the well-being of patients and to create spaces that can effortlessly adapt. As designers, we have a social responsibility and this spurred me on to make contact and collaborate with healthcare professionals to make them aware of design as a tool.
What role do you see designers play in a pandemic?
I’m the founder and creative director at Kanaän Design Studio, based in Port Elizabeth, where I constantly explore how creativity can create a better world!
