Dear IID Member,

Today we mark the 50th Anniversary of World Earth Day (April 22nd, 2020), it is an auspicious occasion particularly since it occurs at the height of a global crisis, but it underpins the broad challenges we still must overcome as a species if we are to continue to survive and thrive on planet Earth. Indeed beyond the COVID-19 pandemic which has exposed the vulnerability and lack of resilience in our societies, we should not forget the more long-term emergency we face in the form of human induced climate change, and the part we must play in our sector to mitigate it.

In the design field we have a responsibility to ensure everything we do is sustainable, that our supply-chains are not only ethically and morally defensible, but that the materials that are utilised do not cause lasting harm to the planet. As designers the commitment we must make is to not only build the new and innovative spaces of the future, but to fundamentally view each project we take on through the lens of environmental impact so we can protect our Earth, the only home we have.
